Coverage of 2009 Brisbane Regionals

An action packed tournament has come to a close, and when the dust settled, 8 players stood apart from the pack of 73 players.
At the top of the standings was Tim Gawne, who although isn’t a top 8 mainstay, managed to crush almost every red player in the room with his monowhite deck. His last opponent was Ed Steele, who, being safe with a loss, decided to try knock Gawne out in the last round to give other players a shot. It wasn’t to be, as Steele’s highly aggressive Jund deck fell to the same hate for red.
Three black-white token decks made it to the top of the tables, piloted by Anthony Purdom, Dan Baulderstone, and Andrew Sordello. Purdom is no stranger to the top 8, however he needed some lucky breakers to make it in to 8th place. Baulderstone has been trying to bust into a top 8 for some time, finally got there in style, being the last undefeated player after five rounds. Sordello is an up-and-coming player who has lingered just off the pace at several recent events, and he made it this time around by surprising mirror-match opponents with Batwing Brume.
Other players on 5-1-1 were Jack Watts and Wei xiang Chua, both of whom had to win the last round to secure their spot. Watts played a 5-color aggro deck, utilizing new cards in Bloodbraid Elf and Anathemancer, to make this his second Regionals success in a row. Wei xiang Chua is a relative newcomer to Brisbane, and one of the few Blightning players to see success (along with 9th place.)
Rounding out the top 8 is Nick Chmielewski, who was the other player with 2 losses to qualify. Chmielewski played a more typical 5-color control deck, defeating opponents with disruption and Cruel Ultimatum.
A mixed bag of old pros, hard-working grinders and new talent have all qualified to represent Brisbane at the National Championships in Canberra this coming July. Congratulations to the top 8, and best of luck at Nationals!

—————————————————————————————
Round 1 - Yuk Wong Fu (Sun) vs Dan Baulderstone
“You just want to catch all my misplays.”
Dan Baulderstone
Dan won the roll, and led with Plains after Sun mulliganed to 6. Sun had the Windbrisk Heights, quickly choosing the best of the 4. A Fetid Heath and Knight Of Meadowgrain was matched by a Cave of Koilos, indicating the mirror. Another Knight and a Glorious Anthem from Dan were unmatched, as Sun was discarding after only playing two land. Two attacks later, and Sun had scooped them up.
Dan Leads 1-0.
Game 2
Both happy with their hands, the players started with Arcane Sanctum. A Windbrisk Heights caused some deliberation for Sun, but he finally settled on a card. A Tidehollow Sculler from Dan took a Stillmoon Cavalier, leaving Path To Exile, Spectral Procession, Glorious Anthem, and two lands. Sun got the creature back with Path, and followed up on his turn with Spectral Procession, which was matched by Dan.
Sun had the advantage though, as when he attacked, the Windbrisk Heights revealed a Zealous Persecution. A Knight Of Meadowgrain and a Glorious Anthem joined the team for Sun, which were faster than Dans Glorious Anthem and Bitterblossom, however a Wrath of God was enough to stop the bleeding.
A Wispmare from Sun took out the Bitterblossom, as his Stillmoon Cavalier met with another Wrath. Thoughtseize from Dan took a Loxodon Warhammer, which might have been brutal on Sun’s new Knight Of Meadowgrain. Dan played a Cloudgoat Ranger to stop the knight.
Sun then attacked with his 3/3 knight, which was then blocked by Cloudgoat and 2x 2/2. Sun tried to kill the Cloudgoat, but it was being pumped by Dan’s own Anthem, so his knight hit the bin. A Stillmoon Cavalier was recruited by Sun, which Dan attempted to remove with Zealous Persecution, but Sun’s Anthem kept it alive and it wasn’t enough of a boost to push past, so Dan had to pack it in.
1-1
Yuk Wong Fu
Game 3
After giving the “triple cut of death”, Both players had to send their hands back. No options for Dan’s Thoughtseize, Sun only had two Marsh Flitters and lands. Heights meant that Flitter would come in handy, as both plays just dropped lands. Dan was first on the board with Spectral Procession, and he followed up with Glorious Anthem after Sun did nothing. The Flitter finally saw play, but it was cut down by a Zealous Persecution. An Ajani Goldmane via Windbrisk Heights was joined by yet another Glorious Anthem to make 5/5 dudes, which was too much for Sun’s lone Stillmoon.
Dan Baulderstone defeats Yuk Wong Fu 2-1.
Dan: “I should have wrathed a turn earlier in game 2. I took the beats and went to 5, then wrathed, but then he had 2 Stillmoons as backup.”
Sun: “No creatures, in game 1 and game 3. Can’t keep it.”
Round 2: Aaron Nicoll vs Cristian Pippia
Aaron is already qualified, but is here to improve his rating and for the thrill of big tournaments. Cristian is looking to qualify for his first nationals.
Game 1
Cristian Pippia
Aaron won the roll and kept seven and Cristian had to mulligan. Aaron led with lands and a Kitchen Finks. A Steward of Velaron helped Cristian play a turn 3 Garruk Wildspeaker, which powered out a beast. The beast dived in to protect its creator, shrinking the finks. Aaron had nothing further as Cristian just laid a Windbrisk Heights and made another beast.
The beast was repulsed at end of turn, and Aaron forced the trade with the Steward by attacking Garruk. The Garruk gained a counter this time, untapping lands after making mana for a Spectral Procession. An Ajani Goldmane created pause for Aaron, who added a combination of 5 mana and tried to draw Broken Ambitions from Esper Charm. He failed, took 2 burn, and the spirits became 2/2.
Aaron had the ultimate response in the Reborn card Maelstrom Pulse, killing the spirits. Cristian got back on the board with a beast and a Qasali Pridemade, and gained two life with Ajani.
Cruel Ultimatum was the turn 7 play, killing the Pridemage and drawing some cards. A spectral was waiting on top for Cristian, although he made the mistake of pumping before playing it.
Aaron tapped all Cristian’s creatures and bounced Garruk on the next attack step, which turned off Windbrisk Heights for a turn. A post combat boost put Ajani to 2 counters, and Garruk was replayed. “Way to have a land” said Aaron, indicating perhaps a Broken Ambitions was waiting to be used.
A wrath kept Aaron out of trouble, but it didn’t deal with the two planeswalkers giving Cristian continuous advantage. He’d have to find a win condition soon. A Cloudgoat Ranger lured out the Broken Ambitions from Aaron, revealing Jace and Wilt-Leaf Liege. Jace disappeared while Wilt Leaf lingered.
Cristian didn’t play the Liege, and simply attacked with a beast and boosted his planeswalkers. Aaron had a Jace into some white mana (he was relying on vivids until this point) and replayed the finks he got back with Cruel Ultimatum. Cristian bashed with a 4/4 beast, which was let through. A Broodmate Dragon was Aaron’s next play, which could end the game in a number of turns, but Cristian’s beasts were now 5/5, of which there were three. Two of them attacked, and after finks soaked up some beats, another Windbrisk Heights was played.
Aaron Nicoll
Aaron had had enough of the planeswalkers and attacked them with one dragon each. The Ajani Goldmane was saved by Path to Exile, and Garruk Wildspeaker bit the dust. A wrath cleared the board once again.
Aaron countered an Elspeth Knight Errant, and Jund Charmed a 2/2 Steward before it was boosted. His own planeswalker, Jace Belaren, was drawing him plenty of answers, including a Runed Halo for treetops. A Cruel Ultimatum again brought back finks, while dropping Wilt-Leaf Liege into play.
Cristian again ripped a post-ultimatum Spectral Procession, but it was countered. An attack by a 5/5 Wilt-Leaf Liege was exiled. With 7 cards in hand, Aaron also had Path to Exile for Treetop Village on defense, allowing Kitchen Finks to kill Ajani Goldmane.
Cloudgoat was countered, and another Finks entered play, followed by an Obelisk Of Alara. The obelisk and a Cloudthresher cleaned up after a long first game.
Aaron Nicoll leads 1-0
Game 2
A Dauntless Escort was Path to Exiled, but Cristian followed up with Garruk Wildspeaker. A couple beasts and a Qasali Pridemage were allowed into play. An Overrun also went unhindered, but the Pridemage was Path to Exiled to prevent some damage. Lamenting his mana flood, Aaron tried to rally with finks. Ajani made him cringe though, and being bereft of counters he packed it in for game 3.
1-1
Game 3
Dauntless Escort started the beatings, but Aaron had some curse words for Ajani as he countered it. A Cloudgoat Ranger was countered and Dauntless Escort was bounced, clearing the board. The escort was dismissed, but it was bait as Cristian had a Spectral Procession.
Another Ajani was countered, and Aaron had a Wrath of god for the tokens. The game was slipping from Cristian’s grip.
Then came the clincher. Aaron played Obelisk of Alara on an empty board. Still, Aaron was fighting the clock, with 5 minutes left and soon had an Ajani Goldmane and Wilt-Leaf Liege to deal with. A Garruk Wildspeaker joined the team for Cristian, as his Ajani Goldmane copped two hits from Obelisk of Alara. Story Circle protected him from the Liege, and the Obelisk started dealing with Garruk. A second Story Circle meant he probably couldn’t lose, but could he win in time? Cruel Ultimatum helped him by a turn, but Cristian was still on 18 as time was called.
A Volcanic Fallout cleared the board but for a Cloudgoat Ranger and also dealt extra damage. And a Cruel Ultimatum put Cristian in range of the Obelisk. Cristian needed some life gain for a draw but his deck didn’t provide, and he died on turn 5 of extra time.
Aaron Nicoll defeats Cristian Pippia 2-1.
Round 3: Anthony Sanderson v Nick Chmielewski
“FNM killed my rating, I need to do well today.” Anthony Sanderson is currently qualified on rating, but only just. He needs a good result to ensure he gets to Nats. “I paid $4 a piece for these stupid dice” said Nick, after losing the roll. Anthony mulled to six, while Nick kept his seven.
Ghitu Encampment and Vivid Grove perfectly revealed the matchup: Red aggro versus 5 color control. A Hellspark Elemental got through, but when a Boggart Ram-Gang tried enter the battlefield, Nick had the counter.
He also had the counter for the 2nd Hellspark, but not for the 3rd. When 2 were unearthed, Nick prevented some damage with Volcanic Fallout. He followed up with Jace Beleren, drawing a card. The Jace got killed by the unearthed elemental, and Anathemancer put Nick to 8.
Kitchen Finks put him back to 10, and Nick was now in a fine position now that there was only one card in Anthony’s hand. Anthony drew a Spray to deal with Finks, had a Mogg Fanatic which he allowed to get countered, so that he could attack with encampment and Anathermancer, dropping Nick to 6. Nick fogged with Cryptic Command next turn after a Ram Gang entered play.
Wrath reset the board, but Anthony still had the Ghitu Encampment. It wasn’t pressing enough for Nick, who named Anathemancer with his Runed Halo. Anthony drew a Flame Javelin and threw it at Nick’s head, and when Nick drew a blank, he packed it in.
“Even Island would have been enough.”
Anthony Sanderson leads 1-0.
Game 2
Nick Chmieliwski
Both players wished luck before leading with a land each. Runed Halo shut down Hellspark Elemental. “You have 2, I can tell.” He was right. Anthony had a Boggart Ram-Gang ignored the Jace Beleren with 5 counters and went for the throat. He actually played a Hellspark next turn, to take care of Jace, but nick tapped all Anthony’s creatures. He then played Story Circle naming red. Anthony wasn’t concerned as he had the Everlasting Torment, although he didn’t need it when attacking Jace. Nick was fond of Jace though, and Path to Exiled the Ram-Gang.
For the second time this game, Nick gave his opponent a card, bumping Jace to 5. Anthony kept it small with a Hellspark Elemental. With all these planeswalker shenanigans, it was about turn 8 and Nick was still on 17. Sanderson tried to reduce that number, but when he played a Flame Javelin, Nick removed the Everlasting Torment with Purge and prevented with Story Circle.
Thought Hemorrhage on a threat missed on damage, revealing Halo, Circle, Sphinx of the Steel Wind and three land. The Sphinx came into play soon after. After a turn of lifelink, and seeing he could never answer the Sphinx, Anthony packed up his cards for the last game.
“I don’t think there’s any way for you to deal with Sphinx.”
“There is a way.”
1-1
Game 3
An early Figure Of Destiny dealt some damage, but Anthony was stuck on two land. A Volcanic Fallout dealt with two Figures, but Nick was also stuck for land, only having three. A Broken Ambitions on Anthony’s next threat hid a Cryptic, as Nick needed to draw land. He got the land, and played Story circle on Red. Anthony slumped. Feeling safe, he allowed a fanatic but still dismissed an Anathemancer. After man turns of preventing the goblin’s damage, Nick Path’ it, and Anthony sacrificed it. A fresh Figure Of Destiny died to Cruel Ultimatum.
“I should have let you path my guy” said Anthony, looking at Anathemancer in the bin threatening eight damage but only having six mana. It would have been perfect with Nick being tapped out. He had a Puppeteer Clique though, which could get around Story Circle, but a handful of cards for Nick contained a counter. He then played Runed Halo to ensure no Banefire shenanigans.
Anthony’s eye’s lit up as he top decked Everlasting Torment, but he had to wait a turn to unearth the Anathemancer. It didn’t matter, as Nick had Purge, and could prevent the damage with Story Circle. Sphinx Of The Steel Wind arrived shortly and cleaned up soon after.
Nick Chmielewski wins 2-1.
Round 4: Andrew Willeston v Matt Fisher
Game 1
Andrew Willeston
We discussed the possibility of a 5c mirror match, as I pondered the idea of playing solitaire for fifty minutes and inventing a match report. After a couple of mulligans, Matt revealed it wasn’t the case by playing a Plains.
Matt struggled to find land, only playing a second on turn 4. It didn’t matter though, as Andrew’s 5c deck could only play lands.
When he finally reached three mana, Jace Beleren entered play, giving both players a card. Andrew got two more with Esper Charm. Broodmate Dragon was played turn 6, as Jace Beleren just got bigger. Mulldrifter joined the side for Andrew.
The eight power of attacks tried to kill Jace Beleren, but two Fogs (Pollen Lullaby and Holy Day) and a Negate later, Jace Beleren lived. Matt was still looking for land, but putting Jace Beleren up to nine counters drew him what he needed to cast Wrath of God.
Obelisk of Alara was played by Andrew, with two mana open. Matt put Jace Beleren to eleven counters, and tried to bounce the Obelisk of Alara. Broken Ambitions for one was enough to stop that. Andrew also dealt with the potential mill for twenty by bouncing the Jace Beleren with Cryptic Command. Matt replayed it and after a quick judge consult Andrew allowed it to stay, but killed it with two Obelisk of Alara activations.
Andrew put a Broodmate Dragon into play, but Matt had the second Wrath of God to clear. Andrew decided to cash in a Path to Exile for a land, given Matt’s lack of creatures. He still had Obelisk of Alara on the table and started dealing three damage at end of turn. Mulldrifter drew some extra cards as well, and would have dealt some additional damage if not for Holy Day.
Matt Fisher
Andrew then revealed his power card in Cruel Ultimatum. Usually this would spell game for many decks. But Matt had a Twincast to copy. And then another Twincast. Brutality! Andrew lost five life in the end, and both players filtered through the cards in their hand.
With a bunch of new cards Matt had some options. A Howling Mine and Jace Beleren sped up Matt’s clock, and Andrew was forced to go after his opponents life total before it was too late. Maelstrom Pulse took out the Jace Beleren. Esper Charm tried to take out the Howling Mine, but onlookers said “wrong shard” and he drew two cards instead.
Matts next play was Mind Funeral, which could make short work of Andrew’s deck, which was now smaller than his graveyard. It hit four lands pretty quickly however. At end of turn, Matt fell to nine life due to Obelisk of Alara and Volcanic Fallout. He then tried to speed up the clock. Matt tried for Cryptic however, countering and bouncing the Obelisk of Alara. Andrew replayed the Obelisk of Alara, but didn’t have mana for the activation. Matt put a nail in the coffin with two more Howling Mines, and with only seven cards left in his deck, Andrew was in trouble. He tried to bounce a Howling Mine at end of turn, giving him the one extra turn needed, but Matt had the Cryptic Command as well, forcing Andrew to run out of cards.
Matt Fisher leads 1-0
Game 2
A turn 2 Howling Mine was followed by a Mind Funeral, which hit eight cards. They played land-go for a number of turns. With five land, Matt added five mana to his pool, played Mind Funeral and passed priority. Matt tried to Twincast after Andrew passed back, but ended up burning for 2 damage. He still managed to mill around twelve cards. Andrew had a Cloudthresher at end of turn, which dropped Matt to 6 life as time was called.
On turn 2 of extra time, Matt tried to stay alive with a Holy Day, which met Cryptic Command. Matt cast Broken Ambitions for one, tapping Andrew’s fourth land. Cryptic Command resolved countering Holy Day, and Matt played another. With Broken Ambitions, Andrew ties the match.
1-1 DRAW.
Round 5: Aaron Reading v Andrew Sordello
Andrew had a monster roll which Aaron couldn’t match. “I know what he’s playing” said Andrew. “Just happy to be here” replied Aaron.
Game 1
Andrew Sordello
Andrew had a turn two Bitterblossom, turn three Tidehollow Sculler with no third land, but he snagged a Broodmate Dragon. Aaron had a Rampant Growth into Chameleon Colossus. It got Path to Exiled before it could do damage, but Aaron had a massive Violent Ultimatum hit two lands and Bitterblossom. After going to ten life, a second Violent Ultimatum hit Tidehollow Sculler and two tokens, leaving a lone die set to 1 on Andrew’s side of the table. The Broodmate Dragon that was hiding under Tidehollow Sculler followed, and made short work of Andrew’s life.
Aaron Reading leads 1-0
“No one likes a sore loser” – Aaron
“But you don’t seem very sore” – Andrew, in reply.
Game 2
Aaron mulliganed to six and lost Fertile Ground to a Tidehollow Sculler, revealing Broodmate Dragon, Infest, Chameleon Colossus and two land. Andrew got his beat on with Tidehollow Sculler and dropped a Kitchen Finks, while Aaron drew more lands. He did manage a Thought Hemorrhage for Cloudgoat Ranger, which missed, revealing two Spectral Processions, Path to Exile, and land. Glorious Anthem helped Andrew’s critters drop Aaron to three life, and when Aaron only had a Chameleon Colossus, he was forced to concede.
1-1
Aaron Reading
Game 3
Another mulligan from Aaron, this time to five cards. Again Andrew had the Tidehollow Sculler, this time after a Windbrisk Heights, choosing Jund Charm and also seeing Kitchen Finks and two land. The Kitchen Finks made it into play, and Andrew followed up with a Spectral Procession. Andrew deliberated over activating Windbrisk Heights or casting Glorious Anthem and went with the Glorious Anthem. Two spirit tokens attacked, and Aaron dropped another Jund Charm, returning the first to his hand. Andrew added a second Glorious Anthem to his empty board while Aaron’s Kitchen Finks entered the red zone, and was joined by a Chameleon Colossus.
Another Spectral Procession came off the top, giving Andrew some 3/3’s. One was relegated to speed-bump duty. The other two attacked and after one was Terminated, Andrew played yet another Spectral Procession. Now that he had plenty of creatures, he was safe to attack with three, and activated his two Windbrisk Heights, revealing Bitterblossom and Burrenton Forge-Tender. A Thought seize took the Broodmate Dragon from Aaron’s hand, leaving an ineffective Jund Charm. After Andrew remembered to block the Chameleon Colossus, there was nothing Aaron could do about the flyers.
Andrew wins 2-1.
Andrew's board position at the end of game 1.
Round 6: Tim Gawne v Johan Kosasi
Both players are at 4-1. A win here should guarantee qualification for nationals. Johan is lucky to be here: a mistake on a results slip means he is 4-1 instead of 3-2 (no shenanigans).
Game 1
Johan Kosari
Tim had to mulligan to six, but had a 2/2 Figure of Destiny deal damage before Johan made a Protection from White Goblin Outlander. Tim could only play another Figure of Destiny and pump them to 2/2 and 4/4 with his many Plains.
Both Figure of Destiny entered combat, and Johan soaked up damage and took two. He played a Mogg Fanatic, and when Tim attacked with two 4/4’s, a Terror and double block took both down. A THIRD one replaced them.
On the next turn Tim had a Reveillark, which Johan unfortunately had to kill with Javelin. He had a plan however, and played Volcanic Fallout after attacking with the Goblin Outlander. Tim’s next play was a Battlegrace Angel. All Johan could do is play a Boggart Ram-Gang and attack, hoping Tim would block, but no luck. Tim dealt five damage on the next attack and he gained five life.
Johan’s Anathemancer dealt………0 damage. Tim only had Plains. Another attack put Tim up to 23 life, and with nothing to answer the angel Johan conceded.
Tim Gawne leads 1-0
Tim Gawne
Game 2
Both players kept and this time Johan had the early Figure of Destiny. After getting hit for two, Tim played a Sigiled Paladin. Figure of Destiny became a 4/4, but Johan had to take two damage from his painlands to do it.
A Knight of Meadowgrain entered the battlefield, and when Johan next attacked, it ate Path to Exile. Tim then played Elspeth, Knight-Errant and tried to pump the Knight of Meadowgrain, but Johan had Volcanic Fallout in response. The Volcanic Fallout and a fresh Mogg Fanatic went to the dome instead of Elspeth, Knight-Errant. Tim was at 11 life but Johan only had a Mogg Fanatic to follow, while Tim had Burrenton Forge-Tender and a soldier token. Infest was the perfect answer, but Tim still had Elspeth, Knight Errant and blast from the past Paladin en-Vec. An Oblivion Ring removed Johan’s Figure of Destiny while the Protection from Red knight dealt five damage twice and was joined by a Voice of All. Johan had no answers, which gave Tim the match.
Tim wins 2-0.
Round 7: Anthony Purdom v David John Brotchie
Both of these players already have two losses. This is David’s first ever standard event. “I tested for 3 hours on Workstation.” Anthony has quite a large resume, with a Nationals top 4 and a PTQ win.
Game 1
Anthony won the roll and led with two Windbrisk Heights and a Spectral Procession, while David had a Mogg Fanatic. A Hellspark Elemental hit play and dealt four damage alongside the Mogg Fanatic. The Spirits were allowed to attack and a Murderous Redcap jumped out from under a Windbrisk Heights, killing the Mogg Fanatic which hit Anthony. Murderous Redcap was then removed with Magma Spray. David had no additional plays, but cast Volcanic Fallout after Anthony attacked the next turn. More spirits came into play from Anthony’s hand, as well as a third Windbrisk Heights. He still had no black mana.
David John Brotchie
David played Anathemancer for three damage, and unearthed the Hellspark Elemental for three more. Anthony attacked again with three tokens, revealing Kitchen Finks and a Tidehollow Sculler. He was on nine life.
Magma Spray killed the Tidehollow Sculler and David played the Shambling Remains it had stolen. Anathemancer traded with half a Kitchen Finks. Anthony made a Glorious Anthem, attacking with flyers and dropping David to six life. He couldn’t find an answer and the flyers got him the next turn.
Anthony Purdom leads 1-0.
Game 2
David played an early Figure of Destiny and attacked with it and Hellspark Elemental before Anthony could mount a defense in the form of Tidehollow Sculler, which took Incinerate, seeing Volcanic Fallout and land. David could only unearth a 3/1 as Anthony played Bitterblossom. David still couldn’t pump his Figure of Destiny due to his tapped Auntie’s Hovels, but had another Figure of Destiny, which was killed with Murderous Redcap. Anathemancer dropped Anthony to 9.
Falling to eight life on upkeep, Anthony bashed with Murderous Redcap and played a Spectral Procession. David’s fourteen life was under threat. He decided to clear the board but not before attacking. Anthony correctly blocked. He cleared with Volcanic Fallout in Anthony’s attack step. Anathemancer was enough to kill Anthony by Bitterblossom in hi upkeep.
“I had two dead Bitterblossoms in hand” – Anthony
1-1
Game 3
Anthony Purdom
Both players only had six cards for the final game, and David had the first play in Figure of Destiny. A Tidehollow Sculler revealed David to only have Hellspark Elemental and four land. David played an Auntie’s Hovel tapped, but lost his Figure of Destiny to Zealous Persecution in response to pumping. He replaced it with another Figure of Destiny, but it died to the same trick.
Anthony played Bitterblossom, as his lands didn’t allow for Spectral Procession. He drew another uncastable card, played Glorious Anthem and bashed with Tidehollow Sculler for three damage. Life totals were 11-18 in Anthony’s favour.
David had Anathemancer, but with only a single Caves of Koilos this meant only one damage. The Anathemancer chumped next turn as a single faerie flew over. He could only manage another Anathemancer, whereas Anthony had a Murderous Redcap to kill it. From that position, he didn’t have enough ways to push through damage. Anthony’s 3/3 did the final damage.
Anthony wins 2-1
