Big thanks to Dan Crane for saving the PTQ. It's one thing to lose its another to feel you got cheated and instead of going home happy if the shambles of the deck swap hadn't have been fixed I wouldn't be back for a limited PTQ that didn't advertise proper deck swaps.

Re Stu. I picked him for top 8, he seemed to be a good player but most importantly at Levi's draft where I played him he was trying different things i.e testing stuff out in unsanctioned matches. He seemed to go pretty well in the actual sanctioned matches beforehand.
Pretty similar to Dave Crewe in that Dave doesn't try to crush every time he sits down and instead seems to try things as well.

Firestarter. The biggest name in magic tends to come from a combination of Playing and Community. Someone like Wafo Tapa doesn't right articles but his decks get copied a lot at FNM level so he gets fame that way.
I would name Patrick Chapin as the biggest name in Magic. His results wouldn't put him at number one but his column, magic show appearances and shameless self promotion make him a contender.

Great podcast again guys ( and nice background ambience Wink ).....

Another thanks to Dan for being the one to tell Mike this was crazy, at least someone had the sense and balls to speak up ( other than just complaining to their neighbours like most of us did )...

Re Stu. I picked him for top 8 for similar reasons ( I watched him a bit at the pre-realease @ fastbreak ). He really seemed to be thinking about a lot more than your "average" player and he seems pretty in tune with his opponents..... ( ie - I played him 2nd round of the PTQ on the weekend and he knew that I had only a land in hand and then drew another by some of my mannerisms ) - that's something only a "better-than average player" picks up.

Firestarter. The biggest name in magic to me would be Wafo-tapa, his finishes in recent years + deckbuilding influence certainly put him right up there.... as for others who deserve somewhat of a mention.... Shuhei for being probably the best player over the last 3-5 years ( the guy's a machine ), Manuel Bucher feels like the next Wafo-tapa to me, his results are outstanding, he builds format defining decks, certainly a force to reckoned with in the next few years.... and Chapin ( for "Magic's character ) for his shameless self promotion and occassional personal results to back it up...

for reference, both basam and hamish went 4-0 then double id'd in :)

the lightning strike after the tristan/levi gp trial comment was classic, lol

zia cameo lol

i don't see how the biggest name isn't kai budde. if you are referring to "at the moment" then chapin is probably up there, even though he kinda bugs me

Well it is an open question, there's no real right answer.

No offence to Stu, but the land read is pretty much the easiest thing to get from your opponents and I would argue the skill factor in determining it is very low. Looking for the signals generally makes a player 'non-terrible' but other than that, average people who pay average attention can easily glean info such as this.

I knew Hamish ID'd in, I just didn't realise what you'd said until I was editing. Basam was a bit of an oops though.

Disagree.
Being not terrible makes my shortlist for top 8.

Then from there I cut it down by who is likely to show up plus who has played lately*.

*Chris and Caley obv show part 2 of this reasoning sucks but it worked last time (picked Anthony Sanderson based on him having a deck ready a couple of weeks in advance) when I got first, and second this time.

Coming into this event there are no weekly drafts, hardly anyone I knows plays regular modo and none of the best players are in serious teams. Some people might get together for a testing session but there's hardly a big difference from the 1st person in top 8 to the guy in 16th.

IF RDM were still active I would put the over under at 2 out of 3 of them making top 8.

Maybe I am impressed because I can't pay attention for more than 5 seconds at the moment without being distracted by a bee or the lights.
