I have written the following guide to hopefully provide some sort of framework of good habits to get into for tournament play. Some of these suggestions are a case of monkey says rather than monkey does because unfortunately I have already developed many bad habits from the days when I did not know any better. You wouldn’t have to attend many magic tournaments to catch me taking a short cut with shuffling, using a dice to keep my life total or accidentally flashing the contents of my entire hand. While most of these rules are basic it is only ok to break them if you know why you are doing so.

When I was at regionals I was asked by one particular player what I thought of his sideboard, and after I gave my opinion someone else offered theirs. I didn’t agree with much of what they said, but their friends seemed to posses the same opinions, which I saw as fundamentally flawed. In this scenario, the beast shall be played by ‘Testing’, and the hero by myself. Roll film.

“I shall obliterate your matchup percentages!” yelled the beast.

Not so fast,” our charming and attractive hero replies, “you have forgotten something.”

“What is that?” The beast asks curiously, its appearance reminding the hero of why many players avoided seeking it out before an event.

Calmly, whilst putting his Elder Dragon Highlander deck back in its giant case, the hero replied, “I am aware of your weakness. And I know how to use you to my advantage.”

Whats up with Brisbane?

Five Brisbane players went down to Melbourne this past weekend in an attempt to steal their PTQ, much like ours was snatched up by Sydney player Aaron Nicastri. And how did we do? I think “Not Well” would sum things up.
